“Business casual” is an ambiguous term that is usually defined as simple, smart casual wear but sometimes with elements of a formal white-tie casual dress code adopted for more conservative white-collar workplaces such as corporate offices. The history of the term goes back to the First World War. Then as now, business casual dress codes tended to equate business with uniforms with formality. Businesses were often identified as “semi-professional”, needing to achieve a certain level of professionalism in order to meet their goals of becoming a success. Nowadays however, business casual blazers are as welcome in the office as in other places of business. However, the basic business blazer style needs to be updated to incorporate more contemporary tailoring and better detailing in order to make it appropriate for more formal occasions: for instance, a plain black blazer with a dark shirt should never be mistaken for a black tie blazer.

The trousers of business casual attire need to be well tailored and well stitched, preferably in dark shades of blue or charcoal. If the trousers are too tight, they can make guys look too puffy in the face, and if they are too loose, they will make guys look tired and worn out. Also, make sure to avoid the classic-but-deadly necktie cuffs. The classic-but-deadly-tie cuffs are made of cotton lining with a rubber cuff that goes all the way around the wrist. They should match the shirt and trousers perfectly so that your uniform looks clean and sharp all the time.

When it comes to women’s business casual attire, they still want to look sharp but there are more details to pay attention to than the necktie and cuff links. For one thing, they should be able to move easily without feeling stiff and they should not be too heavy. They can either match the skirt, jacket or pants very closely or they can contrast with it. An important tip here is to pay attention to the dress codes for the particular line of business casual clothing you are wearing. While professional appearance often depends on the type of business casual attire you are wearing, it is still important to follow the basic dress codes when wearing clothing for professional events.

Another important thing to remember is to make sure your shoes, belts and other clothing items complement each other so that it is less formal than it really is. For example, casual shoes are less formal than formal shoes. Also, make sure your belt and other accessories are in the same tone as the rest of your clothing. If you want to wear a dark colored suit, a light colored belt is also not such a good idea because it will only take you to looking too formal instead of being casual.
