A minimalist lifestyle is simply a disciplined way of living that is devoid of stress, cluttered cares, and clutter. A minimalist simply has very little stuff and feels totally at peace with himself. Most importantly, a minimalist lifestyle makes us appreciate our environment and live for it. This type of lifestyle is more suitable for busy people who don’t have time to clean up their mess and enjoy nature. Here are some ideas on how to live a minimalist lifestyle.

Start by getting rid of the most obvious clutter from your home. A bedroom closet with everything neatly stacked in one corner or a bathroom cabinet with everything neat and clean in it can easily become a source of stress and frustration. Instead, de-clutter and organize your room. Divide up the items you won’t be using on a daily basis and put them in a cupboard or storage unit for future use. Don’t worry about organization skills, just focus on reducing clutter and maximizing available space.

Another way to live a minimalist lifestyle is by avoiding material possessions. The contemporary material culture and consumerism has caused most people to feel inadequate without having multiple possessions. So do yourself a favor and get rid of all those material possessions you have been collecting for the last five years. It will be more meaningful to give these items away or hand them down to someone who needs them. If you still have some of the unwanted possessions, minimize its size and function. A useful desk or table will serve as enough material possessions for a minimalists lifestyle.

Decluttering your house will also help you live a minimalist lifestyle. Think about what you haven’t used in a year or two and list down all the stuff you still have. Then, start categorizing the things into different piles like “paper”, “benefits”, “invaluable”, “unused”, “orphan”, “toy”, “furniture”, “treasure”, “antique” and “masterpiece”. These decluttering piles will now serve as your new minimalist lifestyle item carts.

Decluttering also entails being mindful of the details. Minimalists live in the moment, so their focus is on the here and now instead of being fixated on the past or future. When it comes to decluttering, it’s not necessary to make everything a heap; rather, make it just an item with a lid. This will encourage you to be more mindful of your belongings and to appreciate the little things that are good to have. When you’re decluttering, just remember that whatever you have in your home is intentional and meaningful to you.

Living a minimalist lifestyle involves taking care of the here and now, appreciating the small things, being spontaneous and living in freedom. Getting rid of everything in your home that isn’t essential will just invite more clutter into your home. A clutter-free home is a home that is truly livable. So the next time you feel lost and frustrated about having to declutter and clean out your home, remember to keep these tips in mind. If nothing else, you’ll be motivated to finally do something about your messes and get your minimalist life started!
