A business suit is usually a simple pair of clothing consisting of a jacket, usually buttoned up, with trousers, matching shoes. It was originally regarded as casual wear in many Western countries, when all three of the following elements were all present: of similar material, worn with a matching necktie, dress shirt, and dress socks. These items are all still present in business suits, but are far less common.

The first element of clothing that has been left out is the tie. In business suits, they are rarely worn except for the top layer. If worn at all, it is an envelope or bow tied around the neck. Ties can be worn on a normal daily basis, or at special occasions; however, they are not worn often enough to make a difference. Formal wear includes evening, office, and formal business suits.

The second element is formality. In the business environment, formality refers to how the attire itself fits with the formality scale – in other words, the suit must be conservative. The scale is visible in many offices by the appearance of door cards, folders, desk accessories, etc. A conservative suit does not mean that the person wearing it is pretentious, just that the suit itself is conservative.

In the workplace, business suits are often worn with white or navy blue dress pants. Light or pale blouses also match this color scheme. Lightweight dress pants are perfect, as they do not overpower the look. Shirt and neckties can be of any color, although a pale, beige color is sometimes used. For a more casual look, an outfit could include khaki or black dress pants.

The last element is the style. This is probably the most important factor in choosing casual attire. It should be in keeping with the business suit, but it does not have to be identical. Formal attire usually consists of a jacket and tie, while the casual suit consists mainly of dress pants and a casual shirt.

The key to dressing properly for work is consistency and the ability to adapt your style to any situation. In addition to selecting appropriate business suits, you should also choose appropriate shoes and accessories. The key is to make sure that you are comfortable in what you are wearing. While there are plenty of resources available to help you find the ideal business suit, nothing will beat your own judgment. Do not let anyone pressure you into wearing something that does not feel right.
