A business suit is a formal wear consisting of a jacket, or blazer, with trousers, or pants. It was historically considered very informal wear, in particular, when all of the same material, and worn with similarly colored necktie, dress shoes, and similar collared shirt. Because of this, business suits were not worn at many professional events, except those where one might work. However, with the advent of more conservative business clothing styles at the workplace, the business suit has become more popular for corporate business women to wear.

For formal occasions, a modern business suit consists of a jacket, or blazer, with trousers. For the most formal occasion, which is an upscale black tie event, the blazer is omitted. Instead, there are two-piece suits, or a two-piece trouser and jacket for women, which include a waistcoat. The most formal occasion that a full-body trouser jacket will be worn is a wedding, black tie event. For the more casual or dressier white-tie or gray-tie occasions, a more casual waistcoat is worn. The sleeves on these types of waistcoats are usually rolled up to the elbow, with pleats above the cuff.

A traditional business suit consists of three parts; the jacket (which can be black, navy, or gray), trouser, and jacket-tie combination. This three-piece suit combination is referred to as a “jacket, trousers, and tie”, or simply “jacket, trousers, tie”. A modern variation on this style is called the lounge suit, which is a two-piece suit consisting of a jacket and trouser. The lounge suit is appropriate for a variety of occasions, including summer weddings and black tie affairs.

There are several types of modern business suits that replace the traditional three-piece suit. The traditional two-piece style is made up of two jackets and one trouser, with roll-neck pants as the only other piece of clothing. Lounge suits, which are styled after the same style of pants used in military uniforms, include a jacket and trouser, but do not include roll-neck pants.

A more casual version of the business suit is called a khaki suit, which can also substitute a two-piece suit in many ways. Khakis can be worn for all occasions, but especially for business meetings and the occasional weekend get-together. They are worn with denims or slacks, making it possible to mix and match with various colors and styles of trousers, which is a great advantage since business attire often requires the wearer to have an exacting level of uniformity. Khakis are made from a cotton blend material, so any stain resistant fabric can be worn, although the lighter, less colored hangers are preferable for the suit. In addition to the use of a heavier cloth for the outer layer of the suit, some people choose to wear darker hangers so as to bring out the true color of the shirt they are wearing underneath the jacket. While a dark blazer may look nice with light colored trousers, the lighter-colored shirt will look better with dark-colored trousers.

When the business attire being selected calls for a jacket or tie, it is often easy to select a single piece of clothing as the main piece, but this may not be practical if the person needs other accessories to complete the ensemble. For this reason, business men commonly wear a belt on their left hand and usually wear a pair of dress socks. The belt and socks create a sort of balance for the outfit, which leaves more room on top for the rest of the ensemble. To make the most of the opportunities presented by business suits, make sure to coordinate every element of the entire outfit; from the tie, shoes and shirt to the socks and belt, so that every part works well with the rest.
