Business casual is a vague yet ambiguous term, typically understood to be casual workplace attire but with certain aspects of a professional lounge suit borrowed for white-collar workplaces like law offices and corporate boardrooms. In defining business casual dress, the term may be used to refer to such outfits as khakis, t-shirts with relaxed fit or button-down shirts, shorts and skirts, both for men and women. Other items commonly associated with business casual are socks (with or without shoes), white-no-shine shirts with pencil sleeves, dress loafers with leather or patent leather shoes, dark jeans with tapered bottoms and athletic shoes. It is also possible to dress in a more conventional fashion with skirts, blouses, cardigans, and jackets.

The current trend in business casual attire is wearing shirts with a V-neck, featuring either a plaid or solid color, and wearing trousers with elasticized or snap-cuffs. Wearing a V-neck shirt with a V-neck jumper does not qualify as business casual, as it clearly identifies the wearer as being employed in the service industry. The same can be said for wearing a sweater with a matching cardigan, as this would be interpreted as workwear but not as casual wear. Conversely, trousers that match a shirt featuring a V-neck can be termed as casual wear. One has to be careful when mixing and matching accessories, such as jewelry, footwear and clothing. A necklace with a formal watch, for example, might make people look like they’re working the graveyard shift, but wearing a tie with a casual shirt will make you look like the co-worker in the office with the neat haircut and neatly pressed business trousers.

For business casual attire to be considered ‘business casual’, it has to be free of too much detail: too many buttons, a need to wear a jacket or tie, or a need to wear shoes. A sporty top, made of cotton or a polyester blend, is enough to create the illusion of a more casual look. Sports logos on the chest and the back of a shirt give the appearance of the wearer having spent a while outdoors in the snow, but it’s a safe side. Also, business casual attire shouldn’t include ties, unless they are of the timeless open-front variety, which are cool no matter what the occasion.

Another essential in business casual attire is a good pair of blazers. They should not be worn too tight, since they can get too hot in the winter. They should be fitted with the right kind of material, from cotton to twill or cashmere, and in a colour that matches their suit and shoes. Black is a safe colour, especially if it is a blazer. A classic blazer should not be out of style: even if the design is in fashion, it should never be out of style for working men.

When attending events like weddings, bachelor or bachelorette parties, make sure you have on loose-fitting clothes so that you don’t hold people back. It’s also important to make sure you’re wearing shoes with well-defined toes. Your socks should be made from the same type of fabric as your shoes, and they should be of the same colour. Remember that wedding weekends are often very formal affairs, so it’s important to dress up for success!

When it comes to wearing shirts and suits in the business casual realm, it is important to keep things simple. You don’t want to be remembered by the tuxedo you put on, because you forgot your shirt or tie. For office attire, you will probably want to wear a plain, short-sleeved shirt with a plain, short-tie and khaki pants. And for casual wears, stick to fitted slacks with a pair of white or black pants. Make sure you button all of your pockets, and turn your belt when you need to.
