Sedentary lifestyles are becoming more prevalent among adults of all ages, both male and female. More people are becoming less active and instead spending most of their time sitting in front of a computer, console, or TV. This has been blamed on the fact that more people are working longer hours and spending less time with family and friends. In addition, the typical American diet is not providing enough nutrients to help people remain healthy and strong. However, it’s also been suggested that sedentary lifestyles are directly associated with a number of health problems including: high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and some types of cancer.

To try to combat the health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle, it is recommended that a person get about half an hour of moderate-intensity physical activity every day. One simple way to do this is to add a thirty minute workout to your daily routine, such as walking briskly along a sidewalk or through a park. If you have a treadmill, even longer is better, but anything that gets your heart rate up and out will be beneficial. A more intense workout can be done in the privacy of your own home, so if you don’t feel like getting up from your computer, a cycling track is ideal. Even taking a bubble bath for an hour or so can be beneficial.

Another important statistic that should be taken into consideration is obesity. Obesity is considered a risk factor for many health problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. While obesity does not cause diabetes or other conditions, it certainly increases your risk factor for obesity. The good news is that obesity can be reduced by changing eating habits, increasing the amount of exercise that you get, and making healthy snacks a part of your diet. Exercising for at least thirty minutes a day has been shown to be very effective in combating obesity.

There is one more reason that it is important to take a close look at your sedentary lifestyle and make some changes. Children who are sitting all day and playing video games tend to be less social and get into more accidents. They also tend to perform poorly in school, have poor reading skills, and less social interaction. Children who spend a lot of their free time sitting around and playing video games instead of playing outside and participating in sports tend to have lower test scores, lower IQs, and develop greater difficulty learning in school.

Sedentary lifestyles are not only bad for your health, but they also cost you money. High in calories and low in nutrition, sitting all day long will cost you a lot of money. Children who play video games instead of going outside and playing in the park pay more attention to their video game addiction which causes them to get obese later in life. Children who sit all day and watch television instead of getting exercise pay more for their health care bills than those who are active.

While the above health risks may seem like a lot, when you really look at them, they amount to a small fraction of your health costs. One of the best ways to prevent them is to simply start up an exercise routine. Starting a vigorous exercise routine early in life is the best way to prevent the development of metabolic syndrome. Starting an exercise routine early in life can help prevent the development of many long term health issues as well.
