Prevent Obesity by Reducing Sedentary Lifestyle

Have you ever thought how your life can be changed by adopting a better and more active lifestyle? Well, it’s not as difficult as you may think. Sedentary lifestyle is not the exclusive domain of elderly people living in small apartments. Young people in today’s world lead very sedentary lifestyles. The sedentary lifestyle includes sitting in one position for most of the working day. Hence, even young people are becoming less active as they grow older.

According to the World Health Organization, sedentary lifestyle has become an increasing problem throughout the world. Lack of physical activity can cause obesity. Obesity can lead to serious health effects like diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even cancer. A sedentary lifestyle also leads to other medical problems like osteoporosis, stroke, high blood pressure and a sedentary lifestyle can also increase the risk of cancer for women.

If you are obese, then the best way to combat obesity is to adopt a healthier and active lifestyle. Obesity can lead to serious health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even cancer. Hence, it is important to reduce or eliminate inactivity in order to prevent obesity.

Exercise has always been associated with reducing weight. Even if you do not have any exercises, walking, jogging, swimming and cycling can significantly reduce your weight and increase your exercise. However, there is one more factor that actually affects the risk factor for obesity; the sedentary lifestyle. Scientific studies have shown that the sedentary lifestyle is a risk factor for obesity; and this risk factor is almost twice as high as that of cigarette smoking.

According to a study on obesity published in Archives of Internal Medicine, sedentary lifestyles are the main reason why American adults have a higher percentage of being overweight or obese than the national average. This finding was made after tracking more than 10,000 adults over a 10 year period. The study found that people who spent more than eight hours per week in sedentary lifestyle had a nearly four times higher risk of becoming obese.

It is quite clear from this study that even if you do not have a physical activity or some physical exercise, you should still consider trying to reduce your sedentary lifestyle to prevent the development of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. It would be better if you could combine some physical activity with some sedentary lifestyle but if not then try to take out a few hours every week to go for a walk or jog. If you want to lower your risk factors for developing cardiovascular disease, it would be a great idea to make some lifestyle changes such as losing weight, quitting smoking and decreasing your sedentary lifestyle.
