It is a daring comedy which involves lots of improvisation, cutting edge humor, and even some suspense. When the two high school boys decide to run a prostitution ring out of their home, they plan it in such a way that it seems completely sane. Joel and Miles plan the whole operation while their parents are away. The fact that both boys are in love with each other and are about to get married adds to the emotional tension between them. When Mom (Sandra Oh), Dad (Barry White) and Mom’s best friend Patti (Beverly D’Angelo) find out about the unusual business venture, they object, but eventually they all agree to let the boys take the business over.

While on a vacation, the boys are attacked by a group of muggers, and Joel gets badly injured. In order to save his life, he agrees to work for the illegal company called Brickman, run by Max ( Wes Bentley). Though this is a great opportunity to make some quick money, the best thing that comes out of the entire situation is the introduction of the character of Bob Seger. Once the police discover that Seger is a criminal, they try to arrest him, but he manages to escape.

Now, with the help of his friend Sandy, who has the knowledge that he can trick the guards into thinking that he is a legitimate employee, Bob returns to the scene of the crime. Here, he discovers that the girls had been taken for an afternoon tour and have been transported to a brothel in a van with several naked hookers. The sole purpose of the visit is to feed the prostitutes, so she has no one to talk to, no one to trust, and no one to turn to for help. When the old time rock and roll band “The Stars” arrives, they notice the difference that has occurred between the two girls. The old time rockers are able to persuade the guards to honor the state’s law and free the girls, but not before they are brutally murdered.

In order to protect the helpless seamstress from another attack, Joe Pantoliano contacts both the New York State Police and the FBI to warn them of the danger that is present in the brothel. The next day, Rebecca de Mornay decides to investigate the crime using her newly found skills of sleuthing, which leads her to a clue that leads her directly to the location of the brothel and eventual death of the suspect. It was then that she realizes the meaning behind the phrase, “a risky business.”

I would definitely recommend reading this book if you are seeking a very unique and dark comedy. In case you haven’t read it, however, I highly recommend that you read the Seger story first. I don’t think that Reading Seger’s story will take away the enjoyment that you get out of reading the subsequent portions about the women and the sting operation. I also think it would be immoderate to read it at full speed since it is very long. However, if you enjoy a good comic-book and love mystery thriller romance tales, than this one would be ideal for you.
