A sedentary lifestyle is usually one that entails very little to no physical activity, wherein most of your day is basically spent lying down, sitting down and expending little energy. This kind of lifestyle has greatly increased over recent years due to an increase in sedentary office jobs which involve prolonged sitting, and an increase in commute times and television time while at work. These people are generally obese and have sedentary lifestyles. As such, they usually have poor health conditions and live with chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, and osteoporosis. They also have lower life expectancies than more active individuals.
The problem with a sedentary lifestyle also entails higher levels of stress on the body, which is directly linked to a variety of negative health outcomes including cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, depression, and other mental health concerns. Being sedentary also affects a person’s psychological well-being. It can make a person feel unproductive because the brain has been preoccupied with thoughts of rest and relaxation, causing inactivity and poor concentration levels. When people are not constantly active, their brains release chemical signals that alert the body to the need for rest. When this happens, it means that the body will need to go without physical activity to replace the time it has been without. This is what causes the body to feel lethargic and less productive throughout the day.
How can an inactive lifestyle be changed? First, you should take some time out of your day to go for a walk or to climb up and down the stairs instead of sitting at your desk. You should also get up and move around periodically throughout the day by walking around your neighborhood or going to the store. Starting these new habits can help you to start being more active again.

Energy Expenditure – Another reason why people develop an inactive lifestyle is because they are not aware of how much energy they are wasting at every point in the day. For example, when you watch too much television, or you do not get enough sleep, you tend to spend less time resting and more time working. This affects how much energy you expend in the daily activities. This is especially true in the case of people who are sedentary due to their inactivity.
Lack of Physical Exercise – Another reason why sedentary lifestyle occurs is due to people not getting any physical exercise. Sedentary activities, especially those that do not require much physical exertion such as sitting down for hours, tend to reduce the amount of physical activity that we perform daily. As a result, there is less physical movement and increased consumption of energy. This will affect your body’s ability to burn calories, lead to weight gain, and lower your overall health. It is therefore important to include physical exercise in your daily activities to lose weight and stay physically fit.
