A 2021 study by the Sedentary Behaviour Research Network (S BRN) defined sedentary behaviour as any activity which has a low direct physical demand, yet results in very little energy intake. Sedentary behaviour is an ongoing condition that most of us carry into adulthood, unfortunately there is now some solid evidence to show that our sedentary lifestyle could be laying the groundwork for serious future health problems. It is now well known that obesity is the cause of many chronic health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. Sedentary behaviour is now known to exacerbate these conditions, and has been shown to exacerbate the development of heart conditions in both men and women. This has led to calls for more people to take action and make the effort to get active.

Not only is being sedentary detrimental to your long term health, but it can also have a detrimental effect on your personal relationships and daily interactions with other people. Studies have shown that people who are sedentary throughout their lives suffer from low levels of mental and physical well-being, and are more likely to experience stress and depression. These people are also more likely to smoke, and be obese. Their less active lifestyle means that they are not getting the exercise and the social interaction that many people need to keep them healthy. Sedentary people are more likely to have depression and other emotional health issues, and are also at a greater risk of developing osteoporosis.

There are many different ways to change your lifestyle to live a healthier life, and there is plenty of support available if you are trying to get active. It is important to try and get regular exercise and build up muscle so that your body has the excess energy it needs to keep going. Changing the way that you eat is a great way to turn your sedentary behaviour around, as this will help you to be more active and stop your weight gain. Try to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables each day, and cut down the amount of junk food and other unhealthy foods that you are eating.

If you want to change your sedentary behaviour, you have to be willing to be disciplined. You might need to put some time aside in the week in order to really get into shape. Take some time out of your busy schedule to join a gym, sign up for some dance classes or go running with your friends. Doing something that you enjoy and will help you to burn calories is going to be much better than sitting at home watching television all day.

Changing your lifestyle does not have to mean making drastic changes to your daily routine. You should aim to become more active, instead of sitting in front of the TV all day. Get into a routine of walking around your neighborhood or joining a gym. There are many gyms that offer free classes for people who are looking to get fit. If you do not have the money to join a gym, you can take yoga classes or swim lessons.

When you are trying to change your sedentary lifestyle, remember that it is much easier to make small changes. Make a commitment to do thirty minutes of exercise on the floor of your room or in your car every day. If you do not have time for a physical activity, try to find something that you can do while you are waiting for the bus, train or car. The more you get active, the more fit you will become, and the less likely you will be to continue being sedentary.
